Geographical Information Systems also known as GIS are used to analyse, create, manage and visualize geographical data. One such program is ArcView from Esri.

ArcView makes use of files with the .dem file extension these are know as Digital Elevation Models which are used for creating digital relief maps with information collected through various means such as LIDAR, Topographic maps, Doppler Radar and Stereo Photogrammetry.

The information can then be used for a number of purposes ranging from modeling, GIS/GPS, design to analysis.
