VMware is a company that develops software used for the virtualization of computers, the company was founded in 1998. There is software for use in the desktop environment which works on computers running Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

The company also provides software hypervisors for use in Servers as well as bare metal embedded hypervisors which run on hardware. A hypervisor is a form of manager for virtual machines which allows multiple guests as the various operating systems installed are termed.

VMware uses configuration files that have the .vmx file extension the file store the information entered when you created the virtual computer and stores information about the operating system, disk size, network configuration etc.
