Virtual drives are a software that makes the computer think that there is a physical drive in the computer.A virtual drive function is built in to Mac OS X and some Linux operating´s systems.On Windows there is no´function built in so that the user will have to use Software emulation programs.

Disc image files that are used for virtual drives use the extension .vcd these are then mounted to the virtual drive and then behave as a physical CD or DVD drive would.
