Many calender software programs use the iCalender format to contact others with appointments or tasks and send these over the Internet by use of email and sharing of .ics files. Most well known Windows Calender products such as Google Calender, IBM Lotus Notes and Outlook support this format as well as Apple iCal on Macintosh computers.

iCalender files use the extension .ics and are plain text files and is a standard format under RFC 5545.
