LDAP which means Lightweight Directory Access Protocol is used for the distribution of directory information over the internet. Uses for this can be corporate address books or telephone directories. Files that are used for imputing the data into the directory database have the .ldif file extension and is known as 'LDAP Data Interchange Format files.
