CD or DVD data saved as a disc image, similar to an ISO but saved in it's format; data from the disc is stored in the MDF file, while the header and track information is stored in the .MDS file.

When trying to burn a MDS/MDF image file using a CD/DVD burning software the .MDS file should be selected and not the .MDF file directly.
