By using MIME or Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions as it is also known it is possible to make use of text in characters other than ASCII, attach non text attachments plus various other functions that extend emails. When MIME is used then either the .mime or .mim file extension will be used but both files are the same apart from extension name. Most email clients are able to correctly encode the mim or mime files so that the email will be shown correctly including attachments if any.
