In 1988 the Moving Picture Experts Group or MPEG was created to create standards to be used in the transmission of audio and visual data which has been compressed.

Video´s that have been made using the MPEG format use the extension .mpeg.

The MPEG format is often used when movies etc have to uploaded or downloaded using the internet.
