Marcel Lemke developed the .ace file extension which is used for the archiving of data and compression this format was later purchased by e-merge GmbH who still maintain the format to this day. To use ace compression under Windows the user will need to download and install the program WinAce which is available as a payed version or a free version which users adware.

The algorithm used by WinAce is propriety and allows for high compression levels as well the time needed to compress a file being short.WinAce also supports the majority of known compression formats when decompressing and ZIP, MA-CAB, JAR, and LHA when compressing files.
