Aegisub is a video subtitle editing program often used for what is known as fansubbing which is the adding of unofficial subtitles to films etc. The program is open source and cross platform and runs on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and FreeBSD.
Subtitle files created by Aegisub which use the .ass extension contain resources for the subtitle such as settings for text etc.
