BibTex is a tool and a file format and was introduced 20 years ago by Oren Patashnik and was created to be used with the typesetting system LaTex. Files that use the file format .bibtex usually contain some of the following entries.
BibTex is used for reference management and is used when formatting lists of references.
BibTex consists of the type which is the word found after the @ sign, citation key and tags which define the characteristics of the entry.

Some of these tags are mandatory and have to be used whilst others are optional. the tag is specified by the use of a equals sign then the content which should be enclosed by curly braces or quotation marks.
