With the advent of High Definition display technologies new video formats were needed to take advantage of the new resolutions.
AVCHD or Advanced Video Codec High Definition codecīs were developed, these files are based on the MPEG-4 format which uses the high definition capabilities that are found in Blu-ray media.
This format can also be found in video camcorders from companies such as Sony or Panasonic as well as others due to the fact that the format supports video recording in high definition.
AVCHD also makes it possible to record direct to disc and has since been further developed so that it supports recording to hard disc and media cards.
