Messages sent through by Microsoft Exchange Server use SMTP protocol and are sent and received from other servers or are non SMTP messages which are the emails that you receive.

Files that are used by Microsoft Exchange Server to store the non SMTP messages use the .edb file extension and are known as Exchange Information Store Database files and contain the non SMTP messages.
