Lock files which are also known by the .lck file extension are files that are used with database´s to stop other users opening an already open database.

It does this by making sure that only one process or user can access the database at a given time, if more than one user or process accesses the database at the same time an Interceding Update Situation can occur which can cause the database to become corrupted.

Lock files are used in both Microsoft Windows operating saystems as well as UNIX, under Microsoft Windows there are various programs that are know to use lock files.
