Windows Movie Maker was a software used for the creation and editing of videos that was a part of Windows operating systems from Windows ME up to Windows Vista, with the advent of Windows 7 the Movie Maker program was superseded by Windows Live Movie Maker which is similar but does not have the same functions as Windows Movie Maker which often preferred when editing videos due to the better functions in the program.

When you create a project in Windows Movie Maker a file is created that contains information about the video, this file uses the .mswmm extension and is used to tell your computer that it needs to use the Movie Maker program to access the file.
