Most highend digital cameras are able to capture images in RAW format which means that the image is as seen by the sensor from the camera.

The easiest way to describe RAW files is to say that they are digital negatives, it is possible to process the image then save it in another format whilst keeping the original as is.

Some Sony digital cameras that support RAW format use files with the file extension .srf which is Sonys version of the RAW format.
