In the 1990´s a file format for graphics was developed called windows metafile, this was developed to make it possible for vector and bitmap graphics to be used and allow portability between programs, the original Windows Metafile format was 16bit and was first used in Windows 3.0, this format has since been superseded by the Enhanced Metafile and Enhanced Metafile Plus formats, the file extension used by Windows Metafile files is the .wmf file extension.
